Our walk begins just above Porta Catania.
A very interesting nature trail, called “the Saracens’ path”, leads us to discover the southern slope of Monte Tauro.
Along the way, you can admire the Gulf of Naxos, Mount Etna, the Gulf of Catania.
If we are lucky, we will even be able to see Calabria!
The flora is very varied: prickly pears, olive trees, acanthus, wild fennel, capers.
The path consists mainly of a stone staircase, which is easy to access.
Along the way we will take breaks to admire the view and tell interesting anecdotes about Sicilian history and culture.
We will pass through the Saracen gate, a stone passage used by the Arabs during the conquest of Taormina, in the 9th century AD.
The walk continues upwards: we will observe the surrounding hills shaped by numerous dry stone walls, typical of agricultural terraces.
A short break at the church of San Biagio and we will reach Castelmola.
The descent is very easy, and will bring you back in about half an hour to the center of Taormina, the final point of our excursion.
