Archeological Park of Siracusa
The Archeological Park of Siracusa is the most famous place to visit in the city!
When the Greeks arrived in Sicily, they founded several cities on the east coast: Syracuse was one of the first, in 734 BC.
The Neapolis is the district where the Archaeological Park stands, with the famous theater: a splendid example of Greek architecture, the largest theater in Sicily, almost intact, and still used today, in spring, for the classic representations of tragedies.
Visiting the park you can also admire the Latomie, ancient limestone quarries, which form real and very suggestive caves.
Monuments from the Greek and Roman periods will amaze you with their majesty.

The Archaeological Park is very large: it develops within an area that was occupied by an ancient limestone quarry, from which the Greeks extracted the material for the construction of the city walls and monuments.
After the earthquake of 1669, which shocked all south-eastern Sicily, a large part of the ceiling of the cave collapsed, leaving some coves, the Latomie, accessible (the most famous are the Ear of Dionysus and the Grotta dei Cordari).
During this tour I will lead you to discover different aspects of Greek culture, one of the most important in the ancient world.
We’ll meet directly at the entrance of the Park; after buying the tickets we will pass in front of the Ara di Ierone, tyrant of Syracuse, and we will head towards the theatre, the most important monument of the Park: I will tell you all about the meaning of the theater in Greek times, the symbols, the architecture, the acoustics.
Our walk will continue through a tunnel of luxuriant vegetation, which will lead us directly to the entrance of Dionisio’s ear (name invented by the painter Caravaggio), a huge and evocative cavity carved into the limestone rock.
Finally, we will visit the remains of the Roman amphitheater.
The experience can be completed, on request, by the visit of the Archeological Museum Paolo Orsi, one of the most important of Italy.
